A new study in the Canadian Journal of Health Research finds that Viagra is a safe and effective treatment for erectile dysfunction.
The study, published online February 10, found that the drug works by increasing blood flow to the genitals to help men achieve and maintain an erection. The study, by researchers at Canadian Pharmacy and Health Sciences University, found that the drug can improve blood flow to the genitals in men with erectile dysfunction.
"Our results show that Viagra is more effective than other treatments for ED," said study author Dr. John T. Cramer of the University of British Columbia, who led the study.
"This is the first study to show that Viagra is a safe and effective treatment for erectile dysfunction in Canada," said study co-author Dr. Richard H. Schmitt of the University of Ottawa.
Researchers from the Canadian Pharmacy and Health Sciences University, the study's authors said they found no evidence of adverse effects.
The researchers also found that the drug did not increase sexual activity or the rate of sexual intercourse in men taking it.
They said that while the study was based on a small sample of patients, the overall results were statistically significant.
Cramer said his team's findings indicate that the drug is safe and effective for men with erectile dysfunction who are not having trouble getting and maintaining an erection. It is also safe and effective for those who are taking it with other medications, such as nitrates, to treat chest pain.
The researchers hope to update the Canadian journal regularly.
Cramer said he is hopeful that the drug may help to improve sexual function and reduce the risk of erectile dysfunction in men with heart disease.

D., senior author of the study, said the results are important because men with erectile dysfunction are often reluctant to seek treatment for it."If men with erectile dysfunction are already taking medications to help them achieve an erection, then the results of the study are still valid," Smith said in an email. "We have seen a lot of interest from patients who have been on Viagra for a while and who are already taking medications to treat their heart disease, and they have been very pleased with the results."
A total of 26,725 men were randomized to take the drug, and of those, 10,000 took Viagra. Viagra is available only with a prescription.
Viagra is also available by prescription for erectile dysfunction and for other medical conditions in Canada.
